The Inspectorate of Prosecution in Scotland today concluded that extended direct measures powers are being implemented as Parliament intended. His report, which has been welcomed by COPFS, commends our training and guidance on SJR and makes three recommendations which have been accepted by the Lord Advocate.

The Solicitor General, Frank Mulholland, QC said on 18 March 2009 that prosecutors can play a greater role in breaking the cycle of offending and create safer communities across Scotland. The news release is attached.

The Solicitor General for Scotland, Frank Mulholland QC, today wrote to the Convenor of the Justice Committee of the Scottish Parliament with figures which show that reforms introduced to the summary justice system a year ago are resulting in real signs of improvement.

As part of the service's commitment to continuous improvement in the quality of preparation and presentation of cases of sexual crime, the Lord Advocate has approved the establishing of a National Sexual Crimes Unit. This will include a team of Scotland’s most senior Prosecutors specialising in the investigation and prosecution of serious sexual crimes.

Tougher guidelines for police and prosecutors are having a significant impact on continuing efforts to combat knife crime, the Solicitor General for Scotland, Frank Mulholland QC, announced today.

retirement, at the end of May 2009, after seven years' service as an
Advocate Depute, of Brian McConnachie, QC, the Principal Advocate
Depute, and further changes to the Crown Counsel team.
