Additional Support for Witnesses

If the Being a Witness booklets do not answer all your questions or you need additional support, you can get help and advice in a number of ways :-

You may be eligible for our Victim Information and Advice (VIA) Service which helps certain victims, witnesses and bereaved nearest relatives. Find out more from this link.

The Witness Service provides support to witnesses at court and can arrange a visit to court before you give evidence so you can find out what to expect. Find out more about the Witness Service from here.

You can discuss any concerns you have or any requirements for additional support with the fiscal, the VIA service or the Witness Service. For example :-

  • If you are elderly or your mobility is restricted, you can hire a taxi to get to and from court. But you must agree this with the fiscal beforehand and keep receipts to claim back expenses
  • You may need information in a language or format other than English, or an interpreter at court
  • It may be possible to apply for you to be allowed to give your evidence in different ways
