Freedom of Information:International Letters of Request (R009807)

Thank you for your request dated 24 February 2015 under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) for the undernoted information:

“How many EAW (European arrest warrants) were received into Scotland in 2014/2015
What were the offences?
How many international Letter of Requests (LOR) were sent out by the copf between 1st Jan 2014 and 16th Feb 2015
What were the offences in regards the LOR's
How many inward LOR's were received in the same period”

Your request regarding European Arrest Warrants has been answered separately.

With regard to your request, I can advise that for the period between 1 January 2014 and 15 February 2015, 153 International Letters of Request (ILOR) were issued by COPFS. These include requests to a foreign jurisdiction for assistance in obtaining a variety of types of evidence for use in cases in Scotland.

It should be noted that this total does not include requests to a foreign jurisdiction to set up a live television link between that jurisdiction and Scotland to facilitate the giving of evidence in court. COPFS is involved in preparing these ILORs, however they are considered to be requests by the Court, not requests by COPFS.

I can advise that in respect of the offences involved in the ILORs issued, the offences involved were as follows:

47 financial offences
46 sexual offences
28 offences of violence
17 drugs offences
7 offences of dishonesty
8 miscellaneous other offences.

In respect of the number of ILORs which were received by COPFS between 1 January 2014 and 15 February 2015, I can advise that during that period 388 incoming mutual legal assistance files have been opened.  This figure does not include all requests for assistance with the service of legal documents in Scotland, which are processed administratively.
