Freedom of Information: Criminal Cases involving Child Victims (R010968)

Thank you for your e-mail of 30 July 2014 in which you requested the following information under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA):

1. With regards to all criminal cases prosecuted by the COPFS, how many involved child victims?

a) can this data date back over the last four years annually?
b) can this data be broken down by the PF offices where the crime was located?
c) can this data be further broken down by the charge itself?
ie. so that for each PF office, I could ascertain how many prosecutions were carried out for individual crimes where the victim was a child...

I have now considered your request and can advise you of the following:

COPFS uses a live operational case management system, specifically designed to receive criminal and death reports from the police and other specialist reporting agencies and to manage the cases for investigation and prosecution purposes.  The information held on the system is structured for these operational needs, rather than for statistical reporting or research purposes.  Due to the way the data is structured on our system, where we are asked to provide statistical information,  we  provide  this  by  number  of  charges  rather than  number  of reports.  More than one charge may relate to the same individual.  You should also be aware that we do not record information specifically on the number of child victims however we do record where “child” features as an aggravator in relation to a charge. This aggravator is applied manually and the data being provided is done so with the caveat that this method is likely to undercount charges with child victims due to an inconsistency in application of this aggravator.

I will now answer each section of your request in turn.
