Freedom of Information: Specialist Reporting Agencies (R008646)

Thank you for your request dated 22 September 2014 under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) for the undernoted information:

“I am looking for information regarding the current amount of agencies, and what agencies in Scotland are registered as specialist reporting agencies to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. If you could advise me where I could find this information I would be grateful. Also if you could advise me how a non Government agency would become a specialist reporting agency if possible.”

I can advise that there are 54 organisations who are currently registered as specialist reporting agencies who can report cases to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) and have done so within the last year.  This number does not include the Police Service of Scotland which is considered to be the main reporting body in Scotland

A list of these 54 specialist reporting agencies is attached.

In respect of the second part of your request, I can advise that non Government agencies would not normally be considered by COPFS as suitable to become a specialist reporting agency unless there were (a) legislative provisions that designated them as the appropriate enforcement, investigative or regulatory body or (b) Ministers had appointed the agency to investigate or enforce legislation.
