Freedom of Information Request : NATIONAL ULTIMUS HAERES UNIT – DEATHS REPORTED

Thank you for your e-mail dated 16 April 2013 under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) requesting the number of deaths reported to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) from 1st October 2012 to date.  COPFS is Scotland’s prosecution service and National Ultimus Haeres Unit (NUHU), from where I am writing, is a small part of COPFS.

NUHU acts on behalf of all Procurators Fiscal across Scotland.

The number of deaths reported to COPFS as a whole in the period 1st October 2012 to 7 May 2013 is 6054, the vast majority of which related to other functions of COPFS.  Of those deaths in that period only 169 were, in consequence of the deceased being apparently intestate and with no known next-of-kin, the subject of a report to NUHU.

The details of all deceased persons, who are apparently intestate and have no known next-of-kin and who are the subject of a report to the National Ultimus Haeres Unit (NUHU) are entered on the NUHU website and therefore are in the public domain.  You can access the website via the following This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  (Please note there is an underscore in front of the ‘N’ as shown at the top of this letter)

If after investigations by NUHU there is an estate to administer the information is passed to the Queen’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer (QLTR) to enable her office to administer the estate.  (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

With regards to your request that we provide you with contact details of those who reported the deaths, this information is subject to the Data Protection Act.  I can, however,  inform you that Care Homes, hospitals, police, social work, environmental health, friends of the deceased and solicitors are but a few of the organisations and others that report deaths to NUHU.
