12 September 2012

Freedom of Information Request: Statistics - Alcohol and anti-social offences

Thank you for your e-mail dated 20 August 2012 under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) in which you requested the following:

"For the previous 5 years, please provide the following data for accused who have an address in each of (1) Dundee City, (2) Lochee, Dundee (3) your entire coverage area; (4) the whole of Scotland .

1. Number of reports to procurator fiscal per 100,000 population for alcohol related offences

2. Number of convictions per 100,000 population for alcohol related offences

3. Number of reports to procurator fiscal per 100,000 population for offences involving anti-social behaviour.

4. Number of convictions per 100,000 population for offences involving anti-social behaviour

5. Number of reports to procurator fiscal per 100,000 population.

6. Number of convictions per 100,000 population."

We subsequently spoke to clarify what information was available, and what information you required. Based on this clarification, and on some additional information you requested, the information I am able to provide is shown in the tables below.

As I explained COPFS uses a live operational case management system, specifically designed to receive criminal and death reports from the police and other specialist reporting agencies and to manage the cases for prosecution purposes. The information held on the system is structured for these operational needs, rather than for statistical reporting or research purposes.

The principal source of statistical information on convictions (points 2, 4, and 6 of your request) is the Scottish Government which publishes an annual National Statistics publication "Criminal Proceedings in Scottish Courts". A copy of the latest bulletin, including details of who to contact if you require any further information, is at the link below.

COPFS do not hold information on population. This information is available from National Records of Scotland at the link below.

http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/statistics/theme/population/estimates/mid-year/index.html

The COPFS database does not hold information on the address of the accused in a readily accessible form. We hold information based on the Procurator Fiscal Office to which the case was reported. Therefore as agreed I can provide information for charges reported to the Dundee Procurator Fiscal Office, and for Scotland as a whole (which is also our entire coverage area).
