In some cases, following an autopsy, a pathologist will advise that an organ needs to be retained for further scientific examination. In these circumstances, COPFS advises the bereaved family of the reason for retention and then publishes information.

This document explains the reason for retaining organs, and advises the number of cases where this has occurred as of 30 June 2020.
