Domestic abuse charges reported in 2013-14

COPFS figures published today show a notable increase in the number of domestic abuse charges reported in 2013-14 by Police Scotland and a corresponding rise in the number of charges marked for court proceedings. The data was extracted in June 2014, and reflects the position at that date.

Increases in reported charges are likely to be primarily due to the priority placed on the policing of domestic abuse by Police Scotland, including the creation of their Domestic Abuse and Rape Task Forces throughout Scotland.

The strengthening of the criminal justice response to domestic abuse by the police and COPFS, coupled with improved victim support provision and significant media attention, contributes to increased public confidence in reporting this type of crime.
