Domestic abuser who subjected women to catalogue of violent and sexual abuse jailed

A violent domestic abuser who repeatedly choked women during a sustained campaign of physical and sexual offending has been jailed.

Lee Mullen pleaded guilty to 14 charges - including multiple rapes and sexual assaults - on the third day of his trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The 33‑year‑old carried out his offending over a three‑year period at various locations across the West Lothian area.

The court heard how Mullen violently assaulted one woman on multiple occasions - including on Christmas Day - after temporarily moving into her home.

During one of the attacks, he knocked the woman to the ground, choked her, and then headbutted her several times, leaving her severely injured and disfigured.

Mullen injured the woman again in a separate assault, repeatedly grabbing her by the neck, hair and body before pulling her to the ground and causing her head to strike the ground.

The prosecution told the court how Mullen used coercive and controlling behaviour towards a second woman who was known to him.

This included accusing her of infidelity, controlling where she could go and who she could have contact with, as well as dictating what clothing she was allowed to wear.

Mullen isolated her from her family, demanded she buy him alcohol and controlled drugs, used her bank card without permission and violently assaulted her.

He subjected a third woman to a similar campaign of domestic abuse, which also saw him take her food and prevent her from eating.

During one incident, Mullen held items of clothing over a lit candle, causing a fire to take hold at her home before leaving the property.

The woman discovered the fire and was able to put it out.

He repeatedly choked the woman, leaving her struggling to breathe during several physical assaults, some of which left her injured.

On 6 October 2026, at the High Court in Inverness, Mullen was given a 25-year sentence: 17 years imprisonment with a further eight-year sentence extension, during which time he will be on licence and closely monitored.

His name has been added to the sex offender register indefinitely and he was given a life-long non-harassment order.

Procurator Fiscal Faye Cook, of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS), said:

“Lee Mullen carried out a prolonged and deeply harmful pattern of violence, coercion and sexual offending against multiple women.

“His behaviour caused significant physical injury and lasting trauma.

“Violence against women and girls continues to be a major issue in our society, and the Crown is committed to tackling it robustly.

“This case demonstrates our determination to hold perpetrators of domestic abuse and sexual violence to account and to protect the public from such offending.

“We acknowledge the strength and resilience shown by the women involved in supporting this prosecution.”
