Man jailed for firebomb attack on house as family slept

A man who carried out a late-night firebomb attack on a house where a mother and her three children were sleeping has been imprisoned for three years.

Owen Martin, 21, poured petrol on to the side of the property in Drumchapel, Glasgow, before setting it ablaze not long after midnight on May 12, 2025.

The occupants of the house included the mother, her 21-year-old son and his friend and three children.

Martin was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court on April 28, 2026, after he admitted a charge of wilful fireraising to the danger of life.

The attack was related to serious organised crime.

He will also be supervised for a year following his release from prison.

Fraser Gibson, Procurator Fiscal of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS), said:

“Owen Martin’s criminal conduct could easily have had tragic consequences and cost lives.

“The prevalence of serious organised crime groups has a corrosive impact on our communities.

“We will continue working with the police and other agencies as a member of Scotland’s Serious and Organised Crime Taskforce to ensure that these crimes are detected and those responsible prosecuted using all measures at our disposal.”

Martin was seen by a witness throwing liquid from a petrol canister on to the property at 12.40am.

The witness noticed that a fire had already taken hold and the liquid caused the flames to spread rapidly.

The fire caused the woman inside to awaken and she rushed outside and extinguished the flames with a garden hose.

Police officers who attended the scene recovered a plastic bottle which contained a strong smell of accelerant from ground beneath the living room window.

Another witness confirmed he had collected Martin earlier that night and taken him to the street and saw him return with a green can which gave off a strong smell of petrol.
